Lawn Care DIY

There are 3 main elements to consider when working on creating your perfect lawn. How you water, fertilize and mow your lawn will have vast effects of your lawns health. I'm not suggesting that you should go into a deep Zen meditation about it, but there are a few rules to follow.
1.
Water to create a solid root foundation. Yes in order to get the top looking great you need to start with the bottom. Grass roots with proper care will grow to between 6 and 8 inches deep. You therefore need to water your lawn to allow the water to sink to this level. If you always water lightly you promote shallow roots. This means more watering as the grass dries out more quickly than if the roots were more established.
2. Correct fertilization is essential for healthy growth. All types of grass require a nitrogen feed at least once a year, if not more. This helps to keep the grass weed and disease free. I recommend you find a good fertilizer that contains some slow acting form of nitrogen such as ureaform, animal manures and milorganite and some quick release forms such as urea and ammonium nitrate. This gives the best results as your grass will respond quickly but the effects of this application should last for a couple of months. Always water before and after fertilizing so that you reduce the risk of burning your grass. Also use the rule of 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet, so you need to work out how much nitrogen is in your chosen fertilizer and apply to that rule.
3. For the best looking lawn use these mowing tips. Keep your mower blades sharp! You will end up with a browned out lawn the day after mowing with dull blades. If you mow every weekend you will need to sharpen the blades possible twice in that growing season. Don't cut wet grass, it can spread grass diseases and it cuts unevenly. Avoid sharp turns if possible you can scalp the grass by doing this. Change mowing directions each time you mow. I know we are all creatures of habit but if you mow the grass a different way each time you actually help to keep the grass growing upright.
